Prelim still pending for Fairfield woman, 27, charged in hit-and-run death - Vallejo Times-Herald

A Solano County Superior Court judge has reset proceedings for Araceli Marin, 27, of Fairfield, charged with the October hit-and-run death of an elderly Fairfield woman.

Marin, who was scheduled to appear Tuesday in Department 9, will return instead for a readiness conference and the setting of a preliminary hearing at 8:30 a.m.  Aug. 19 in the Justice Center in Fairfield. She pleaded not guilty to the charge, a felony.

Court records show that Marin, after her arrest by Fairfield police officers, was charged with one count of hit-and-run driving resulting in death or serious injury to another person. She also was initially charged with destroying, erasing, or concealing evidence; and driving with a suspended or revoked driver’s license, among other charges.

Marin posted $50,000 bail on Feb. 24, pleaded not guilty to all counts on April 20, and faced additional proceedings on May 7.

Deputy District Attorney Young Kim leads the prosecution, and Deputy Public Defender Lauren Jacobs was her last defense attorney of record.

The Solano County District Attorney’s Office filed its felony complaint on April 13.

According to Fairfield police, events unfolded on Oct. 22, when Namie Stewart, 81, went for a walk in her neighborhood around 11 p.m. She reportedly was struck by a vehicle in the area of Cement Hill Road near Laurel Creek Park. The motorist fled, leaving her in the roadway.

Stewart was transported to a local hospital, where she later died.

Following the initial investigation, police offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the driver.

A witness came forward, police said, offering information that reinvigorated the case.

“Investigators followed these leads, pointing them to a suspect and suspect vehicle now in Texas,” Fairfield police Lt. Jausiah Jacobsen said in a press statement. “Working with deputies in El Paso, TX, they located the vehicle involved with damage consistent to the collision. The vehicle was seized as evidence and processed for further clues.”

He added, “Fairfield investigators conducted search warrants, gaining more evidence located in the suspect’s residence and electronic devices, further witness statements, and digital evidence retracing the steps of where the vehicle traveled prior to, and after the collision.”

Jacobsen said Marin, who, according to court records, has been cited several times previously for traffic violations, eventually was arrested on April 13 and booked into Solano County Jail on a warrant that listed the charges.

Solano County Jail records do not show that Marin remains in custody.
