MILLINOCKET — Millinocket teachers were notified earlier this week that the town treasurer was not authorized to sign off on payroll checks due to repeated discrepancies within the school budget.
Several school teachers took to social media to express their frustration after being told no pay checks would be authorized.
We spoke to town council member, Steve Golieb who clarified that the school budget for fiscal year 2023 has not been approved because the school department’s revenue does not match up with school expenses.
Tuesday afternoon superintendent Dr. Joshua McNaughton submitted payroll for fiscal year 2023 despite the fact that this particular budget is still awaiting approval and the school department still must work off fiscal year budget 2022.
Golieb says there is a lack of communication between the town and the superintendent. He also explains that the town treasurer is not authorized to sign off on a budget that has not been approved by both the Millinocket town council and community members.
The superintendent says the school department has requested on numerous occasions to have access to the general fund account that houses carry over funds.
Council member Golieb said he called an emergency meeting to address teachers’ concerns and the town treasurer will sign off on payroll allowing teachers to get paid.
Goleid says he hopes the town council and superintendent communicate better in the future so that teachers pay will not be in jeopardy
