Denver Broncos 2022 Offseason Preview: Pending free agents, team needs, draft picks, and more - Pro Football Network

If nothing else, the Denver Broncos’ 2021 season revealed some significant truths. It proved once and for all that Teddy Bridgewater and Drew Lock are not franchise quarterbacks. It demonstrated that coach Vic Fangio and offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur have severe limitations. And it made clear that critical changes are needed in 2022. We look ahead to the Broncos’ offseason, their most pressing team needs, pending free agents, draft picks, and salary cap space.

Denver Broncos 2022 Offseason Preview

Once the Broncos figure out their coaching staff, general manager George Paton’s sole focus has to be on finally fixing the quarterback position. Denver has the defense, skill position players, and offensive line to make a deep run. They just need someone who can make the throws.

Bridgewater is an unrestricted free agent, and if he’s back in 2022, Paton’s offseason will have been a failure. The Broncos need to make a play for Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, Deshaun Watson, or any other top-flight quarterback who might be available. They have the cap space and the draft assets to go after anyone they want. It’s on Paton to get it done.

Denver is in pretty good shape financially heading into 2022. Almost all of the Broncos’ $6.4 million in dead money is a result of their decision to cut Ja’Wuan James with a June 1 designation. But Denver still needs to be judicious with its spending. Short of restructures or trades, the Broncos will struggle to free up much more space. That could make for some tough decisions if they are able to land a top-tier quarterback.

Broncos’ pending free agents in 2022

Bridgewater is the biggest name, but he probably isn’t the most important. The biggest question marks come on the defense, which played the last half of the season without Von Miller (traded to the Rams at the deadline) and is in danger of losing several more significant pieces.

Cornerbacks Kyle Fuller and Bryce Callahan, linebacker Malik Reed, and safety Kareem Jackson are among the Broncos’ 17 unrestricted free agents. They are going to have a lot of decisions to make on their defense at all three levels. Running back Melvin Gordon is the most significant offensive player on that list outside of Bridgewater. If he comes back in 2022, it’ll likely be with a significant pay cut.

Broncos’ team needs

Quarterback could easily fill all five spots on the following list. But that’s not to say the Broncos have a slam-dunk Super Bowl roster even if they acquire Rodgers, Watson, or Wilson. There are concerns at pass rusher after the Miller trade, and the Broncos don’t have nearly the depth at cornerback that we thought they did six months ago.

At linebacker, there are concerns with Kenny Young, Alexander Johnson, Micah Kiser, and Josey Jewell all set to become free agents. Even if they feel confident rolling into the season with Justin Strnad and Baron Browning as their top two options, they will need to add depth at the position. They also need to make some decisions on their offensive line, especially at right tackle.

Broncos’ top five needs in the 2022 NFL offseason

  • Quarterback
  • Edge defender
  • Linebacker
  • Offensive tackle
  • Cornerback

Broncos’ 2022 NFL Draft picks

Paton’s decision to effectively punt on the 2021 season by dealing Miller resulted in some short-term pain with the hope of long-term gain. In April, he’ll enjoy the benefits of that vision by picking five times in the first 100 selections. Denver also has an extra fifth-rounder by virtue of the Trinity Benson trade.

Here’s how the Broncos’ 2022 NFL Draft picks currently stand according to the draft order:

  • Round 1
  • Round 2 x 2 (from Rams)
  • Round 3 x 2 (from Rams)
  • Round 4
  • Round 5 x 2 (from Lions)
  • Round 7

Troy Gustafson and his uncle Marty Gustafson caught pending Illinois-record shovelnose sturgeon from the Rock… - Chicago Sun-Times

Troy Gustafson and his uncle Marty Gustafson had never caught a shovelnose sturgeon before in their lives, let alone from the Rock River.

But, once genetic testing is complete, Troy will have a state record (9 pounds, 14.1 ounces) caught on Nov. 16. It was bested by Marty with a 10-8.2, caught while fishing with Troy, on Dec. 12.

In late fall, Troy and Steve Pohlmeier, editors of the “Team Catfishing Adventures” Facebook page, were catfishing on the Rock.

“So when we went out and were scanning for wintering fish, channel catfish especially,” Troy said. “Saw some fish grouped on the bottom and thought they were flatheads and set up on them with cutbait with no luck. But we foul hooked a couple sturgeon by the tail.”

That led to research on the shovelnoses and Troy contacted Carbon Cliff Bait & Tackle to ask what to do if they caught a state record.

“Bring it down here and weigh it,” they told him.

Next they figured how to fish for sturgeon with “dew worms” (night crawlers). They caught several shovelnose and the second was a 38-inch female, Troy’s record, on Nov. 16.

“I texted Jeremiah and he got all excited,” Troy said.

Jeremiah Haas is the principal aquatic biologist for Exelon’s Quad Cities Generating Station, where Troy works the night shift.

They reached fisheries biologist David Wyffels.

Troy built a livewell in his shallow johnboat, “kinda hillbilly.”

“I had my Wi-Fi camera on [the livewell] when I had to go to work,” Troy said. “Came home at lunch and filled the tank back. They came in the morning weighed and released it.”

Rob Colombo, a fish ecology professor at Eastern Illinois, said shovelnoses are throughout Illinois’ large rivers. The Wabash had commercial fishing to get hackleback caviar.

That has led to thought on putting restrictions on the Rock population.

Illinois also has the federally endangered pallid sturgeon, in the Mississippi, and the state endangered lake sturgeon. Shovelnoses are state protected where they overlap with pallid sturgeon.

There’s 27 sturgeon worldwide; shovelnose are the smallest.

“Ten, 12, 15 pounds is a really big one,” Colombo said.

Pallid sturgeon can reach 50 pounds, lake sturgeon hundreds of pounds.

Shovelnoses look different with a flat nose that evolved to be on the bottom of swiftly flowing water.

“They are opportunistic omnivores, Whatever they can catch and fit their mouth they will eat: small crustaceans, fish, mostly macroinvertebrates,” Colombo said.

Friday mornings, after work, Troy often fishes with his uncle. On Dec. 12, they hit it.

“It was like they started biting in a flurry, three on that time,” Marty said. “It was almost like times you catch white bass. That is how I ended up with that one, because he was busy. Luckily he was preoccupied and I got the really big one.”

“Three fish in the boat and tangled up in lines,” Troy said.

Now the wait for the genetic testing, which may explain the unusual tails on the Rock shovelnoses.

“Still to be determined if that is genetic or if it’s just something that happens when they get that big, but my gut says it’s a local characteristic,” Haas texted. “I’ve handled a lot of sturgeon on the Mississippi River and it never stood out, but I’ve never really directly looked either, that’ll change this May/June. It is so prominent, even on the small ones on the Rock River. . . . We’ve been doing a lot of theorizing on this population for years, and are looking forward to some hard data.”

“Pull something like that out, it is an experience you don’t get to have every day,” Marty said.

Round Rock ISD superintendent on leave pending investigation - FOX 7 Austin

The Round Rock ISD school board has voted to place their superintendent Dr. Hafedh Azaiez on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an external investigation.

The Board also approved engaging an external investigator to examine allegations of misconduct by Azaiez unrelated to his duties as superintendent.

This move from the board comes following a letter a TEA monitor wrote to the district back in December recommending the school board place the superintendent on paid administrative leave.

The TEA told FOX News this letter was in response to an assault allegation against the superintendent as well as the court order against him in Travis County.

During Thursday’s meeting the board appointed Dr. Daniel Presley to serve as Acting Superintendent of Schools.

Round Rock ISD gave FOX 7 Austin news this information on Dr. Presley:

"Presley served as Acting Superintendent from Nov. 30, 2020, to July 4, 2021, prior to Azaiez’s arrival. Presley has more than 30 years of experience as an educator in schools throughout Texas and Louisiana and was the inaugural principal of Cedar Ridge High School. He has served as Senior Chief of Schools and Innovation, the District’s second-in-command, for the past eight years. In this role, Presley oversees the District’s Area Superintendents as well as departments including Health Services, Fine Arts and Athletics. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Centenary College in Louisiana and his doctoral degree from Texas A&M University in College Station."
