A judge on Tuesday ordered 16-year-old Cruz Medina held in custody while awaiting trial in the shooting death of an Albuquerque Academy student at a house party in December.

Medina will be charged as an adult with first-degree murder in connection with the Dec. 18 killing of 18-year-old Jada Gonzales, the 2nd Judicial District Attorney’s Office said.

A talented writer and photographer with family in Zuni Pueblo, Gonzales had recently received a four-year college scholarship at the time she was killed at a house party in the 5200 block of La Bajada NW.

Medina’s attorney, Adam Oakey, agreed to waive the pretrial detention hearing Tuesday on condition that he could file a motion later seeking Medina’s release from custody.

Second Judicial District Judge Clara Moran found “there is clear and convincing evidence that (Medina) presents a danger to the community.”

Moran also ruled “that there are no conditions or combination of conditions of release that the court could set right now to reasonably ensure the safety of the community.”

Medina remained in custody Tuesday at Bernalillo County’s juvenile detention center.

Jessie Parra (MDC)

Medina’s co-defendant, Jessie Parra, 19, has remained in custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center since his arrest Jan. 17.

District Judge Lucy Solimon on Feb. 1 granted a prosecutor’s motion to hold Parra pending trial.

Parra also faces a charge of first-degree murder in Gonzales’ killing, court records show.

Both he and Medina face additional charges of shooting at an occupied building, tampering with evidence, and two counts of conspiracy.

Prosecutors allege Medina and Parra were among several males who were kicked out of the party the night of the killing, according to an arrest warrant filed in Metropolitan Court.

Witnesses told police the group was carrying firearms and posing for pictures with the guns, as well as flashing gang signs, before they were asked to leave the party. They appeared “reluctant, embarrassed and angry” as they left, the affidavit said.

Minutes later, gunshots were fired outside the house, it said. The fatal round traveled through a bedroom and penetrated an interior wall, striking Gonzales in the torso.

Wintry precipitation mix expected as part of pending storm - Daily Herald

A wintry precipitation mix is expected throughout the region when a large storm system arrives in the Chicago area Wednesday, meteorologists at the National Weather Service office in Romeoville are predicting.

Expect icy conditions in far northern Illinois during the day Wednesday, while heavy rains are anticipated to the south, particularly along the Interstate 55 corridor.

Lake and McHenry counties could see significant freezing rain throughout Wednesday, according to forecasts.

Wednesday night, an icy mix is forecast for most of the northern suburbs and heavy rain and thunderstorms to the south.

High winds are expected Thursday morning throughout the suburbs, with a wintry mix of precipitation anticipated along the Wisconsin border as well.

Temperatures are forecast to drop Thursday, dipping into the teens with windy conditions continuing throughout the evening.

Friday will remain cool, with temperatures hovering in the 20s and another chance for more snow overnight.

A warmup is expected Saturday with highs potentially reaching into the mid-40s, before dropping back into the 20s at night.

Researchers will get access to TikTok data — pending company approval - The Verge

TikTok will expand access to its research API to nonprofit academic institutions following earlier limited testing with experts. But research proposals have to be approved first.

TikTok will let researchers at US-based nonprofit universities access public data, the company announced today, following earlier rounds of testing with subject matter experts.

The platform’s API will allow academics and researchers to access “public, anonymized” data like user profiles and content like comments, likes, and favorites on videos and search results in order to better understand TikTok trends and user activity. The research API was first announced last summer, and members of an advisory council were given access to the API in November.

Now, a wider range of researchers will be able to study TikTok more closely, but access to the API is still controlled by the company. Research proposals require approval by TikTok’s US Data Security division, and academics must adhere to terms of service to use the API. The company says it will expand access to its research API to more regions and nonprofit researchers “in the coming months.”

TikTok’s initial announcement of the research API came as multiple reports detailed the complicated relationship between TikTok and its parent company, ByteDance. Since then, scrutiny has only intensified as TikTok has tried to prove it isn’t a threat to national security: the app has been banned from government-issued phones belonging to members of the House of Representatives, and similar restrictions have spread to states and other federal agencies. In December, ByteDance confirmed several employees had tracked Forbes journalists in an attempt to unearth the source of leaks coming from inside the company. Several employees were fired or resigned as a result. TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew is scheduled to testify before Congress next month.

The news of increased access to public data is the latest in a flurry of moves from the company aimed at increasing trust, purporting to give researchers, journalists, and the public more insight into how it operates. Earlier this month, the company invited media to tour its Transparency and Accountability Center, a physical office space where visitors can interact with mock moderation software and learn about its security practices. Even so, banning TikTok has become a highly politicized issue as US politicians on both sides of the aisle continue to call for an outright ban.

The day before White Sox position players report to spring training, the team may have found its starting second baseman. A source confirmed to NBC Sports Chicago that the team re-signed Elvis Andrus to a one-year deal, pending a physical. He’s widely expected to play second base, after filling in at shortstop last season.

The White Sox initially signed Andrus in August 2022, after he was waived by the A’s. He played 43 games for the Sox, after Anderson was lost for the year with a hand injury. Andrus batted .271/.309/.464 with nine homers, 28 RBI and 11 stolen bases over the White Sox stretch run. He was reliable in the field, and only committed one error.

Before the Andrus signing, the key figures in the second base competition were expected to be Romy Gonzalez, Leury Garcia and Lenyn Sosa. Last season, second base was a sore spot in the White Sox lineup. As a unit, White Sox second basemen only hit .238/.278/.351 with 12 homers and 48 RBI in 2022.
