The Slanted Media Coverage of the Pending UAW Strike - CounterPunch

One of the major crises facing our country is that eight large media conglomerates control 90 percent of what the American people see, hear, and read. And that kind of corporate ownership is now being seen clearly in the coverage of the labor conflict between the United Auto Workers and the Big 3 automakers.

I find it interesting that the major reasons as to why autoworkers might go out on strike have been rarely, if ever, the focus of the corporate media’s coverage of the conflict, so let me list some of them.

In the first half of 2023, the Big 3 automakers made a combined $23 billion in profits – up 80 percent from the same time period last year. But if you’ve watched any corporate news coverage of the pending strike by 150,000 autoworkers, you’ve heard more about the strikes’ potential negative effects on the economy and a litany of excuses why very well-compensated CEOs just can’t make a fair deal.

You won’t hear that last year the CEO of General Motors raked in about $29 million in total compensation, the CEO of Ford made approximately $21 million, and the CEO of Stellantis pocketed over $25 million. In fact, over the last four years pay for those CEOs has increased by more than 40 percent.

You won’t hear that over the past decade these same companies made some $250 billion in profits in North America alone.

You won’t hear that the average starting wage at the Big 3 today is around $17 an hour – less than a number of non-union auto plants around the country – and that the top wage is $32.32 an hour.

You won’t hear that, unbelievably, over the last 20 years, the average wage for American autoworkers has decreased by 30 percent after adjusting for inflation.

You won’t hear that autoworkers at the Big 3 are earning less today than they did 15 years ago.

Of course, none of this is new. The corporate media will always side with CEOs and shareholders. Every time working Americans stand up and demand what is just and fair, the corporate media is there to tell viewers that workers are asking for too much.

Despite what you might hear in the corporate media in the coming days, what the UAW is fighting for is not radical. It is the totally reasonable demand that autoworkers, who have made enormous financial sacrifices over the past 40 years, finally receive a fair share of the record-breaking profits their labor has generated.

PUMP Restaurant Liquor License is Pending Transfer to Roosterfish Following Lawsuit - WEHO TIMES West ... - WEHO TIMES

Roosterfish is officially coming to 8948 Santa Monica Boulevard, at the former home of Lisa Vanderpump’s Pump Restaurant. California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) shows liquor license number 651445 for Roosterfish, is currently pending a transfer. The license by primary owner WEHO 8948 LLC is transferring the liquor license from PUMP LOUNGE, P.U.M.P., LLC, where Vanderpump’s husband, Ken Todd, is listed as the managing member.

The transfer could be in response to a lawsuit against Todd who is being sued for nearly $1 million for reportedly breaching his rental contract with the landlords of the Pump Restaurant named after Vanderpump.

Sneak peek inside up-and-coming Roosterfish at former Pump Restaurant space

On August 1, 2023, a legal case was initiated by 8948 Santa Monica Partners LLC, a California Limited Liability Company, against P U M P, LLC, along with other parties. The lawsuit, falling under the category of “Other Contract,” was filed in the Los Angeles County Superior Courts, specifically at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse in Los Angeles. The current status of the case is listed as pending.

According to reports, 8948 Santa Monica Partners claims that Pump failed and refused to keep and perform” their lease conditions.

The company pursuing the legal action is seeking $750,000 in damages for the alleged breach of contract and an additional $200,000 due to purported failure to transfer a liquor license, which holds an estimated fair market value of $150,000, among other claims.

The owners of 8948 Santa Monica Partners LLC expressed their determined pursuit of damages, emphasizing Todd’s full liability in the matter.

Responding to these allegations Todd stated that when they took over the location, known as Pump, a decade ago, it was a vacant parking area. He maintained that they had planted olive trees and installed antiques like chandeliers, which he claimed to have carefully removed when they vacated the property. Todd also insisted that the liquor license in question had been in use by their business for the past decade and was rightfully theirs, although he expressed a willingness to sell it to the other party at a fair market value.

PUMP was expected to transfer the liquor license to the next tenant upon surrendering the property on July 13, 2023. However, it is claimed that Todd, retained the liquor license, causing a delay in the opening of a new restaurant on the premises. This delay is said to have incurred monthly losses of around $56,500 in base rent and related charges for the landlords.

The property owners assert that Todd engaged in deliberate and malicious fraudulent activities when entering the lease contract in 2013. They believe that Todd’s actions were carried out with a disregard for ethical and legal standards.

The terms of the liquor license transfer have not yet been made public. However, a look inside the new Roosterfish shows some activity that suggests the new restaurant and bar could be close to opening. The interior has a new paint job and the bar looks stocked, possibly for a private event, or some sort of photo shoot.

The windows have been since covered up as the City of West Hollywood awaits the grand opening of the new business.

A year after Sindang murder, stalking crimes persist, bills pending - The Korea Herald

A year has passed since the Sindang Station murder, in which a female Seoul Metro employee was killed after being stalked by her ex-colleague, but most bills proposed since to beef up protection for stalking victims remain pending in parliament.

Korea's anti-stalking law was revised to punish perpetrators without the consent of stalking victims and a law to support stalking victims was enacted in the wake of the murder case last year. Despite the revision, the scope defining stalking as a crime remains narrow, and critics argue that more measures are needed to preemptively protect victims.

Currently, six amendment proposals to the anti-stalking law are pending at the Legislation and Judiciary Committee of the National Assembly.

Two proposals suggest a law to prevent perpetrators from contacting victims through postal mail, while a third bill calls for expanding the distance of the restraining order against potential stalkers from 100 meters to 300 m.

Another revision suggests introducing a "victim protection order" system for stalking crimes, which would allow victims to apply for a protection order directly to the court without going through an investigative agency. A fifth amendment seeks to allow the court to order the perpetrator to get a doctor's consultation on their stalking behavior.

The last pending revision suggests expanding the scope of what constitutes as stalking behavior, including cases in which the perpetrator attempted to make contact, such as making a phone call to the victim.

The anti-stalking law was revised in June this year, to allow for location tracking devices to be worn by perpetrators even before the court ruling, but the revision does not take effect until January next year.

This comes as police have booked more than 7,000 alleged stalkers this year, data released Tuesday showed.

According to police data Rep. Kwon In-suk obtained, 7,545 stalking suspects were booked by the police from January to August this year. Of them, 4,942 cases, or 65.5 percent, were sent to the prosecution.

During the last two years since the implementation of the anti-stalking law on Oct. 21, 2021, 18,362 alleged stalkers have been apprehended, and 65.1 percent of the cases were handed over to the prosecution.

Civic groups have called for enhancing the "emergency measures" and "provisional measures" to separate the perpetrator and the victim.

Emergency measures include restraining orders that ban the access of perpetrators within 100 meters of the victim’s residence and orders that ban contact via phone or online. It can be issued by the police directly. Provisional measures are stronger measures taken when the court accepts the police's request, which include not only the restraining orders but also orders to detain the perpetrator at a detention center for less than a month.

According to the National Police Agency, 11 percent of 6,030 emergency measures and 8 percent of the 12,008 provisional measures have been violated since the implementation of the anti-stalking law.

A man in his 30s who murdered his ex-girlfriend in front of her apartment in July this year committed the crime even though the court had ordered provisional measures for dating violence and stalking before the incident.
