REDDING — Charles Schaub’s resignation from his job as an English teacher at Joel Barlow High School is “pending” following his arrest in late April. Schaub has been on administrative leave since the school district learned of the arrest in early May.
The 29-year-old was arrested and charged with public indecency and second-degree breach of peace on April 30, both of which have been categorized as class B misdemeanors.
Neither Schaub nor his attorney responded to requests for comment from The News-Times.
Days after the arrest came to light, the Easton-Redding-Region 9 school district sent Schaub a letter obtained by The News-Times stating he was on administrative leave with pay “pending investigation of the matter in question.”
The letter dated for May 4 outlined the terms of Schaub’s leave, advising him on what he may and may not do during that time.
Schaub was advised to refrain from contacting any students, parents and staff except for central office administrators and his union representative, but to “remain accessible” to the administration during the workday as a staff member might try to contact him over the phone.
He was also instructed not to report to work or be on the premises of any Easton-Redding-Region 9 school or administrative building, nor act on behalf of the district in any way or access its computer systems, per the letter.
On June 21, Vicki Cram — the district’s human resources manager — told The News-Times Schaub’s “resignation is pending” but did not provide further details about him nor the process.
Schaub’s arrest
State police arrested the 29-year-old when responding to a report of “a male party who had exited his vehicle nude and exposed himself to three females” at a Southbury shopping plaza, according to a police arrest summary.
The responding officers found Schaub “wearing no pants” in the vehicle matching the description given by a caller, the arrest summary stated. He was arrested and released from custody on a $5,000 non-surety bond.
Schaub hasn’t entered a plea and is scheduled to appear at a Waterbury courthouse on Aug. 4 at 10:00 a.m.
