Padres pregame: Second half begins with lineup change, pending roster moves - The San Diego Union-Tribune

The Padres will open the second half Friday in Washington (4:05 p.m. PT) sitting a season-high six games behind the first-place Giants in the NL West and in a need of at least one roster move as left-hander Ryan Weathers will hit the IL with the injury on the back of his foot, near the Achilles tendon.

The corresponding move won’t be announced until later Friday, although Padres manager Jayce Tingler said it would be a position player and Tucupita Marcano was seen Thursday evening at Nationals Park.

The Padres will also need another roster move Saturday as left-hander Blake Snell is expected to come off the injured list, and the team is planning for right-hander Yu Darvish to return from the IL and start Monday in Atlanta.

As for Weathers, he’ll most certainly miss his next start but Tingler said Friday afternoon the 21-year-old rookie has a chance to return to the rotation before the end of an important road trip as the Padres (53-40) look to start the second half on the right foot, beginning with a three-game series against the Nationals (42-47).

“We’ve been talking all year about playing our best ball down the stretch in the second half,” Tingler said. “We’re excited to get it going.”

The first lineup of the second half will see Trent Grisham return to the leadoff spot for just the fourth time since returning from the injured list in mid-June.

Friday, however, is the first time over that stretch Grisham has been the leadoff hitter with Tommy Pham still in the lineup; Pham had the day off the last three times in which Grisham was atop the order.

Pham is hitting .176/.214/.250 over his last 10 games and will drop to the fifth spot in the order.

Grisham is hitting .306/.394/.548 with three homers and 15 RBIs over his last 17 games.

Here is the Nationals’ lineup:

Friday’s pitching matchup

Padres RHP Chris Paddack (4-6, 5.38 ERA)

Paddack allowed a career-worst nine runs — eight earned — in his last start, a two-inning outing against the Nationals. He appeared out of the bullpen Sunday (2 IP, 1 ER), putting him on four days rest as the Padres come out of the All-Star break.

Here is how the current Nationals have fared in their careers against Paddack (Note: Starlin Castro has been placed on administrative leave as MLB investigates an alleged domestic violence incident):

Nationals RHP Erick Fedde (4-6, 4.59 ERA)

The former first-rounder allowed six runs on eight hits and a walk in 4 1/3 innings in a loss to the Padres earlier this month at Petco Park. Fedde has a 5.40 ERA in 20 career innings against the Padres.
