Details pending after transformer fire at Evergy's Emporia Energy Center - KVOE

A transformer failure led to a fire at Evergy’s Emporia Energy Center early Friday.

Reading Benefit firefighters were called to the peak usage facility on Road 200 near Road U around 1:45 am. Reading Fire’s Scott Wilkerson says one of three transformers failed and melted down. It was a total loss and Evergy may well have to replace the other two transformers, which were damaged.

No injuries were reported and there were no power outages. Evergy rerouted power, maintaining constant power to the grid and letting firefighters put out the fire safely. Firefighters used foam and about 1,500 gallons of water to get the fire out.
