TULSA, Oklahoma -
Superintendent Kirt Hartzler of Union Public Schools is recommending a mask mandate for students and staff with exemptions for medical, religious, or "deeply held personal beliefs."
According to a letter sent to parents, the mandate would begin Wednesday, September 15, pending Board approval. The Board has called a special meeting for noon on Friday to vote on the measure.
"Due to the Delta variant, we are experiencing positive cases that are higher than at any point last year, which is extremely concerning. Like many schools and organizations within the region, we are experiencing severe staffing shortages in both certified and support positions. As a result, there may be times when we have to suspend transportation services, or close classrooms or school sites and transition to distance learning due to our inability to staff safely and efficiently," said Hartzler. "We are at a critical point. Therefore, I plan to ask the Board of Education to consider a mask mandate – with exemptions for medical, religious, or strongly held personal reasons – for all students and staff while indoors on district property."
Union officials say the current Covid cases at Union are at 181 positives among students at staff as of September 8.
