The Colorado judge charged with threatening another person with an AR-15-style rifle will not be allowed to carry on his duties as a judge while the criminal case against him is pending.
Interim Fifth Judicial District Chief Judge Paul Dunkelman decided Monday to place his predecessor, former Chief Judge Mark Thompson, on paid leave until further notice, said Rob McCallum, spokesman for the Colorado Judicial Branch.
Thompson, 54, was charged Oct. 17 with felony menacing. He was immediately removed from his leadership position as chief judge over courts in Summit, Clear Creek, Eagle and Lake counties, but had been expected to resume his duties as a judge — though not chief judge — upon his return from planned paid time off.
Instead, he will remain on leave and a senior judge will take over Thompson’s duties starting in November, McCallum said. Senior judges are retired judges who return to the bench in a limited capacity across the state.
The menacing incident is alleged to have occurred on July 25, though the details of what exactly happened that day were not included in initial court records and the victim’s name was redacted from a criminal complaint.
Thompson is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 17.
