A proposal to open a distillery in Old Lycoming Township was met with concerns about noise and light pollution from residents near the planned location.
According to Drew Lomison, who made the request, the business is intended to be a quiet and relaxing atmosphere that distills and bottles beverages on-site and allows for brief tasting.
Bonni Stahl, a township resident, spoke during the meeting about her concerns with the distillery. Stahl said she lives nearby the distillery’s potential location and was concerned about noise and lighting should the business expand.
The board of supervisors gave Lomison the go-ahead to purchase the building on the condition Lomison returns to the supervisors before obtaining a certification of occupancy.
“This is not an open-ended approval. We need to set ground rules for hours, lighting, et cetera. I don’t think we should give him a license for some of those things until they are answered,” said Supervisor Linda Mazullo.
Lomison said the business, which has been a decade in the making, is planned to be launched in 2023 if approved.
Despite the Old Lycoming Township Police Department previously announcing the township’s trick-or-treat night to be on Saturday, Oct. 30 from 5 to 7 p.m., the supervisors moved it to Sunday, Oct. 31 from 5 to 7 p.m.
In other news, the board of supervisors also approved appointing Marc Drier as the zoning/hearing boards’ solicitor at an hourly rate of $115.
Fall leaf collection will begin in the township Oct. 25. Residents are encouraged to rake leaves into a pile at the curb of their property, being careful to not rake them into the streets, township manager Matt Aikey said.
As far as finances go, the township supervisors also authorized the creation of a bank account for the township’s capital reserve budget. Furthermore, Aikey said that after four budget work sessions, the borough’s budget for 2022 is close to completion and should be advertised soon.
Township supervisors also approved Sam Aungst and Matthew Aikey as signatories to the $388,757 PennVest loan for the township’s street sweeper.
