Sharks forward Evander Kane is currently considered a non-roster player and was not listed on San Jose's opening night roster, the team revealed on Monday. That will remain his status "pending completion of the NHL's investigation," per a team statement.
Kane is currently under investigation for two separate matters, including possibly attempting to falsify his COVID-19 vaccination status, and also an allegation by his wife, Anna Kane, of domestic abuse in a divorce filing. Kane, the Sharks' leading scorer last season, has not partaken in training camp since the league announced those investigations on Sep. 22.
Kane was previously cleared in the league's investigation into allegations that he gambled on NHL games.
The Sharks and Kane may not have to wait long before the league makes some sort of announcement about his status. NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly told The Athletic on Monday: "I do expect, obviously, there'll be news vis-à-vis Evander Kane relatively soon. I don't know whether that's (Monday) or whether that's later this week, but that there should be news in the near future, for sure."
In the meantime, the Sharks will attempt to integrate some younger players onto their roster to make up for the offense that they are losing for as long as Kane remains out. Among the players to make the team out of camp are William Eklund, the seventh pick in the 2021 draft, and Jonathan Dahlen, a second-round pick of the Ottawa Senators in 2016 who has spent the past two seasons in Sweden.
