Man charged, more pending in robbery, crash | Columbia County | hudsonvalley360.com - Hudson Valley 360

CLAVERACK — A Greenport man remains in the Columbia County Jail where he was taken after being charged with multiple offenses on Tuesday, including a robbery and a serious car crash, said Aaron Hicks, public information officer for state police Troop K.

Joshua Charron, 24, was charged with second-degree robbery, a class C felony, third-degree robbery, a class D felony, fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, driving while ability impaired by drugs, second-degree reckless endangerment and reckless driving, all misdemeanors, Hicks said.

More charges are pending in the case, Hicks said.

Three people were taken to Albany Medical Center, two of them with serious injuries, following the accident.

At about 3:13 p.m., police were looking for a 2001 Toyota pickup truck after they received a tip that Charron had stolen merchandise from Lowe’s and Kohl’s on Fairview Avenue in Greenport, Hicks said.

Troopers located Charron driving the truck south on Route 9H and attempted to pull the vehicle over. Charron refused to comply and led police on a short pursuit. The chase ended when Charron ran a red light at the intersection with Route 66 and collided with a 2011 Toyota Tacoma, being driven by a 70-year-old man from Ghent, Hicks said.

A passenger in Charron’s truck and the Ghent man were not immediately identified by state police.

Officials at the accident scene initially requested two Life Net helicopters respond to the scene. They were canceled when it was learned that the helicopters could not arrive quickly enough, and it would be faster to bring the patients to Albany by ambulance.

Several vehicles that were for sale on the lot of Village Dodge were hit and damaged in the crash.

An investigation by troopers indicated that Charron had stolen items from Kohl’s and forcibly stole items from Lowe’s before fleeing the stores, Hicks said.

Charron was arraigned in Claverack Town Court and was sent to the Columbia County Jail without bail pending a future court appearance, Hicks said.

The area of Route 9H and Route 66 near the crash was closed for four hours Tuesday afternoon while the state police Accident Reconstruction Unit made their investigation.

Lengthy delays were reported by motorists along the detour routes.

Assisting at the scene on Tuesday were: Claverack Fire Department, Mellenvilleville Fire Department, Greenport Rescue Squad, Valatie Rescue Squad, state police, the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office and the Columbia County Fire Coordinator’s Office.
