Former USMNT star Jozy Altidore agrees to join New England Revolution, pending Toronto FC buyout: Source - The Athletic

Forward Jozy Altidore has agreed to join the New England Revolution, a source confirmed to The Athletic. A deal has not yet been signed; Altidore still needs to be bought out by Toronto FC, his current club, before he becomes a free agent, sources said.

Altidore and TFC are expected to complete a buyout, a source said. The 2017 MLS Cup MVP has agreed to terms on a three-year contract with New England, according to a source.

A source also confirmed that the salary agreed to is under the designated player threshold of $1.6125 million, meaning the club can use allocation money to buy down his budget charge and not count him as a designated player. The Revolution already have the maximum of three designated players in Carles Gil, Gustavo Bou and Adam Buksa.

Altidore, who joined Toronto FC in 2015, has struggled over the last two seasons. He appeared in 29 games over that span, scoring six goals. He scored 56 times in the previous five seasons.

The 32-year-old has played 115 games for the USMNT and was a key member of the 2010 and 2014 World Cup squads. Altidore has not played with the national team since 2019.

The Revolution (22-7-5) finished atop the Eastern Conference of the MLS last season before falling to New York City FC on penalty kicks in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
