A measure to reauthorize the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor Commission for 15 more years has made it through Congress and awaits the signature of President Joe Biden, U.S. Rep. Paul Tonko, D-Amsterdam said this week.
This bill has advanced through Congress as part of the bipartisan omnibus spending package, and is expected to get Biden's approval Saturday.
“I’ve fought for years to reauthorize and maintain this commission that helps sustain our Capital Region communities, and I’m proud to see this provision passed as part of our landmark funding package,” Tonko said.
The renewal means the corridor can continue its work promoting the state canal system "as a world-class tourism destination and fostering vibrant communities connected by our waterways,” said Bob Radliff, heritage corridor executive director.
Tonko said reauthorization ensures the commission remains financially sound and can bring in the resources necessary to allow it to be enjoyed by residents and visitors for generations.
The federal spending bill also ensures dozens of National Heritage Areas continue to receive funding through 2023 and secures $173 million for the Historic Preservation Fund. That includes $27 million for the Heritage Partnership Program to National Heritage Areas, and delivers $84 million for national recreation and preservation. It includes $28 million for competitive rights to preserve the sites of underrepresented community civil rights, and $10 million in grants to historically Black colleges and universities.
