Two state troopers are on paid leave as authorities investigate an incident that seriously injured a 61-year-old Newfane man, according to a press release from Vermont State Police.
At 2:15 a.m. Friday, Sgt. Ryan Wood and Trooper Zachary Trocki from the Westminster barracks responded to a resident calling about a guest acting irrationally and causing damage to his house at 521 Vermont Route 30.
When the troopers arrived, they found the man on the roof of the house and tried to de-escalate the situation but were unsuccessful, according to police. Eventually, Trocki fired a bean-bag type projectile that hit the man who then slipped and fell about 15 feet to the ground, police said.
Marshall Dean of Newfane was taken by ambulance to Brattleboro Memorial Hospital and later transferred to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire. He had surgery for treatment of life-threatening injuries Friday and was reported to be stable on Saturday, according to police.
State police are investigating the incident and have placed them on paid leave, per protocol. Their identity and photos were released Saturday.
They were the only two troopers who responded to the incident on Friday.
Wood was hired in 2012 and assigned to the Rockingham barracks after he graduated from the Vermont Police Academy. In 2016, he was assigned to the Narcotics Investigation Unit. He was promoted to sergeant the following year and transferred to the Westminster barracks, according to the release.
Trocki was hired in fall 2021. He was assigned to the Westminster barracks after he graduated from the academy this spring. He is the one who deployed the bean-bag round, police said.
After the state police investigation is complete, the case will be turned over to the Vermont Attorney General's Office and the State's Attorney's Office for independent reviews of the use of force. The Windham County State's Attorney's Office has recused itself from the case and referred it to the Orleans County State's Attorney's Office, the release stated.
Clarification: This story has been edited to make clear that the investigation into the use of force is ongoing.
Correction: The caption was changed to identify the officers correctly.
