The Sterling Police Department is facing a use of force lawsuit over an incident that occurred on Oct. 9.
Details are unavailable at this time, but Sterling Police Chief Tyson Kerr confirmed late Thursday that there is a lawsuit pending. Kerr said officers were dispatched to investigate a possible domestic disturbance in the 1200 block of Hamilton Street. Kerr said the caller described the disturbance as “physical in nature” and reported hearing children screaming from the residence.
Shortly after arriving on scene, Kerr said, officers made contact with the residents, a male subject was taken into custody and leg restraints were applied. A use of force review was conducted later the chief said.
Because the litigation is still pending, Kerr said he cannot comment further on what happened during that contact. He did say the department is taking the matter “very seriously.”
“The Sterling Police Department takes all allegations of misconduct very seriously,” Kerr said. “All members of the organization receive regular training on use of force, and arrest control.”
