Responding to the question of DMK MP Tiruchy N Siva, Union Minister of law and justice (independent charge) Arjun Ram Meghwal on Thursday said that as on July 14, there are 60.62 lakh cases pending in the high courts and 4.41 crore cases pending in the district and subordinate courts. As per the data retrieved from the Integrated Case Management System (ICMIS), there are 69,766 cases pending in the Supreme Court, as on July 1.
The minister also informed the house that to speed up the ongoing trials the sanctioned strength of the judges has been increased and the appointment of judges are carried out. In the last 9 years, 56 judges were appointed to the Supreme Court.
Similarly, the sanctioned strength of the judges in the district and subordinate courts was 19,518 in 2014 and now it has been hiked up to 25,246.
