Commander of Ukraine's 128th brigade suspended pending investigation - president - Ukrinform

The commander of Ukraine's 128th Mountain Assault Brigade has been suspended pending an investigation.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced this in his nightly video address, Ukrinform reports.

"I held a meeting of the Staff. The first issue was related to the tragedy with the servicemen of our 128th separate mountain assault brigade," he said.

Zelensky noted that military personnel, Minister of Defense Rustem Umerov, Chief of the Security Service of Ukraine Vasyl Maliuk and Ministry of Defense inspector Ihor Voronchenko had delivered reports at the meeting on "what has already been figured out about the circumstances of the tragedy, whose orders entailed the tragedy."

"The brigade commander has been suspended for the time of investigation," he said.

He also noted that the whole situation is being analyzed minute by minute. "And it will be found out who exactly violated the rules on the safety of people in the area accessible to enemy aerial reconnaissance," he said.

"There will be no avoidance of responsibility," Zelensky said.

Earlier reports said that 19 soldiers of the 128th Mountain Assault Brigade had been killed and dozens wounded in a Russian missile strike on a village in the southeastern Zaporizhzhia region.

WE Stock Alert: WeWork Shares Halted for Pending News - InvestorPlace

Trading of WeWork (NYSE:WE) stock was halted pending news, indicating a bankruptcy filing may be imminent.

Before trading was halted, WE stock was selling at $1.13 per share, up 35% over the weekend. That would put the market capitalization near $60 million.

The trading halt was issued at 3:51 a.m., according to Bloomberg.

WeWork stopped paying rent at several major properties over the weekend.

This Is Not the End

The move should not come as a surprise. InvestorPlace reported extensively on it on Nov. 2. It’s expected stockholders, bondholders, and landlords will all take losses.

A WeWork bankruptcy filing could also be the first step in an unraveling of commercial real estate markets, according to The New York Times. That’s because of WeWork’s enormous footprint in cities like New York. There, it had 47 locations under rent and 60% of the city’s co-working space.

Landlords have already given rent concessions to the company as it spiraled down. Some might be tempted to offer more concessions to keep space occupied. That could be behind recent buys in WeWork stock.

The real value of Class B and C office buildings could be half what it was before the Covid-19 pandemic, according to some observers. Some landlords have already defaulted, as the value of some buildings is less than what is owed on them.

But just as the commercial office space market is collapsing, New York housing remains unaffordable. Small apartments have been consolidated into larger units to accommodate home-based executives. The city’s plan to change zoning codes would only get back the number of units lost in those conversions. The plan does include converting some offices into apartments.

What Happens Next?

The pandemic and resulting work-from-home trend hammered both the commercial and residential markets. It will take time to work out, but there’s an enormous opportunity coming to those who can create solutions.

A WeWork bankruptcy, while painful, will be the first step toward creating those solutions.

Muskegon Heights may return to traditional school model pending debt forgiveness - FOX 17 West Michigan News

MUSKEGON HEIGHTS, Mich. — For roughly two decades, the Muskegon Heights school system has struggled with crippling debt to the tune of more than $30 million.

That could all change, thanks to legislation now on Governor Whitmer's desk.

Muskegon Heights' school system has struggled to pay back what it owes to the state. While they've reportedly been chipping away at that debt, it would have taken years to pay back.

Now, they may not have to.

“This is a great, exciting day for Muskegon Heights,” Reedell Holmes, superintendent for Muskegon Heights Public School Academy System, said.

“First of all, I’d like to thank the governor and our state Legislature, who passed the supplemental bill to forgive the debt for Muskegon Heights Public School Academy."

For more than a decade, Muskegon Heights Public School Academy System has been in the red.

“It’s a long-time debt that’s been hanging over our head for years,” Holmes said.

That could all change with one signature from the governor, directing Michigan's Department of Treasury to pay off more than $30 million owed by the district.

“It will really give us the opportunity to sort of rebuild the whole structure of our school,” Holmes said.

The district's superintendent, Reedell Holmes, says if signed, this would effectively dissolve the school's charter system, which has been in place for more than 10 years.

Muskegon Heights would, in every way, start running as a traditional public school system once again, according to Holmes.

“Now it puts us back in the driver’s seat,” Holmes said.

It won't be without challenges, but Holmes says he's up to the task, adding that because they'd be returning to a public school model, it will be easier to find qualified teaching staff, something the district has struggled with over the last few years.

“I am so excited. I’ve been shouting for joy all day. I’ve been waiting for this moment to happen,” Holmes said.

The superintendent tells FOX 17 he plans to host a community-wide celebration of this announcement in the coming weeks.

Two women caught in $1 million fraud, more charges pending - Jamaica Observer

KINGSTON, Jamaica - Two women who were posing as work-and-travel agents, were slapped with multiple charges of fraud, after being accused of syphoning off over $1-million in total from seven of their victims.

Karen Facey and Sudine Hall appeared in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Tuesday to answer to the charges. Court documents revealed that they reportedly took a total of $1,627,500 from the complainants. Hall and Facey were commissioned to secure employment in the United States for the complainants but no jobs were forthcoming.

They were charged with multiple counts of engaging in transactions involving criminal property, operating as an employment agency without a licence, conspiracy to defraud and obtaining money by false pretence.

The investigating officer indicated that additional charges will be brought against them as other victims have come forward.

During the proceedings, the women told presiding judge, Lori-Ann Cole-Montague that they were willing to reimburse the complainants.

When asked when the money will be available, Hall indicated that she can pay $1-million on November 16. Hearing this, the judge set that date for their bail application.

Additionally, fingerprint orders were made for both Hall and Facey.

It was revealed that the police seized over 30 passports during a search of their homes. The judge ordered that the documents be released to their owners.
